This course introduces students to quantitative, scientific reasoning within the context of modern astronomy. We cover a variety of topics in astronomy, including celestial coordinate systems and the constellations; the Earth-Moon-Sun system; the Solar System; the birth, lives, and deaths of stars; the interstellar medium and the structure of our Galaxy; extragalactic astronomy; and cosmology. The course emphasizes the joy of scientific discovery through historical examples, current events and unsolved questions, and student observing experience.
